André Boucher– photographer

 Biography

André Boucher was born in Saguenay, Quebec; he lives and works in Montreal. After studying communications, he worked as a photographer for the newspaper Le Soleil from 1974 to 1980. In 1978, he founded Groupe Image, a gallery and photographic distribution agency in Quebec City. In October 2008, he published his first book, Épreuves du Temps. In 2022 he published a monograph, Le Chant du Sablier (for which he received funding from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec). His works have been exhibited throughout Quebec and can be found in many private and museum collections.

Statement

At the beginning, I wanted to be a war photographer – to go to the heart of conflicts. I quickly understood, following a meeting with the war photographer Donald McCullin at his suburban London residence in 1975, that this was not necessary. I realized later that the conflict was first and foremost within myself and everywhere around me. Over time, I realized that I had to disarm myself and free myself from the prejudices I had acquired along the way. I then tried to decipher the others who inhabit me, and the events that rub shoulders with and define us. First and foremost, I want to testify, to leave a trace, a questioning, a reflection, a search for meaning, and a few grains of light behind me.Boucher– photographerBoucher– photographer
